Hi Shaila,


I start by thanking you for your great thoughts on our BI&A diffusion paper. Naveen and I discussed over the phone at noon. I summarized our conversations below. 
  1. In the previous email, Naveen said that "I will delete your files from the folder". However, in the phone call, Naveen changed and said that "I will delete your files in the shared folder once you share the folder and your codes with me ... And Shaila will delete the files". 
  2. Naveen told me that he did not know he should be responsible for handling experimental design and endogeneity. He explicitly said that you told him that you let me "take care of handling endogeneity methods, propensity score matching, look-ahead propensity score matching". I believe what he said is wrong.  If I know how to do it, why bother others?  We invited him to join the project only to handle experimental design and endogeneity. If he does not handle it, we will not invite him. Both you and I want to move the paper forward. Naveen claimed he looked forward to contributing. But no action talk only. He keeps talking and demanding, does not do it, and tells me to handle the experimental design, DID, and PSM. Therefore, I believe that we should be cautious about inviting him on the project. If he does not do the experimental design (DID & PSM) and endogeneity, we should not keep requesting him to do so. We should invite someone else who is willing to and is able to handle this part. 
  3. Naveen told me to give him my key analysis codes. Shaila, you were my dissertation advisor and you did not even require it. I believe the request is already beyond the scope of a last author's responsibility. Further, employing DID and PSM does not need any codes from hypothesis testing. This is completely an additional request. I realized that when communicating with me individually, Naveen's tone and attitude has been totally different from when in your presence. So I will not meet with Naveen again without your presence. 
That is the summary of the phone conversation between Naveen and I.

  On how to shorten a paper (or where do I begin cutting?). A few years ago, my favorite journal unexpectedly imposed page limits on submissions. Suddenly, authors were expected to tighten their work up & submit more parsimonious work. The request evoked panic. I wasn't ready to lose any precious words I had written. So, I submitted an over-the-length paper. It was promptly returned. I wanted to publish the paper, so what did I do? I slashed pages from the manuscript. First, I eliminated hanging words. Hanging words refers to the extra word or two in a sentence that extends into the line. It can be tricky slicing them, esp. if you are already a tight writer. I have cut as many as two pages from papers by doing so. Second, I revisited the method. Authors tend to overexplain their analysis - both how they did it and how to interpret the results.
